I wish all of our clients and business associates a Happy New Year!
Rodyk has continued to grow and strengthen its capabilities to serve businesses in Singapore and the region. We have more than 200 fee earners covering the key commercial practice areas of dispute resolution, finance and capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property and corporate real estate.
2014 was not an easy year for many businesses in Singapore. Controls on the inflow of foreign workers added urgency to the quest to raise productivity. The property cooling measures softened demand. Some clients faced weakness in key export markets. As our clients demonstrated resilience, adapting and seeking out new markets, they turned to Rodyk for help and assistance. We helped Singapore businesses with investments and transactions across Asia. As trade and investment flows within Asia increase, more and more of our work is for projects outside Singapore, and for non-Singapore clients. Examples include acting for a PRC EPC contractor in its acquisition of a major stake in coal-fired power plants in Vietnam, acting for a Myanmar group in a significant hospitality joint venture in that country and representing a European investor in Thai infrastructure in an arbitration in Switzerland.
On a historical note, 2014 marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, one of the last century's terrible conflagrations. A hundred years later, armed conflict remains a feature of modern life. The civil war in the Ukraine led to the tragic downing of a Malaysian Airlines' flight and the loss of all on board. This Christmas, one might recall the first Christmas of the First World War, a hundred years ago, when British and German soldiers suspended hostilities for a day, and played football together in No Man's Land. If only the spirit of Christmas would endure the whole year round!
2015 in turn marks the 50th Anniversary of Singapore's independence. It has been an honour for me to serve on the steering committee planning celebrations, under the leadership of Minister Heng Swee Keat. As Singapore's oldest Law firm, Rodyk looks forward to our Golden Jubilee. Rodyk today, like Singapore, is transformed from what it was fifty years ago.
Like Singapore, today we are fully global in our orientation. Once again, we have been recognised globally as a GAR 100 firm for international arbitration, and twenty of our lawyers have been recognised as leading individuals by one or more of Chambers, Legal 500 and Asialaw.
Rodyk builds its relations with clients to last, believing that it is in partnership with clients, and by nurturing and deepening trust, that we too will prosper.
