John is a Senior Associate in Dentons Rodyk’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution and Arbitration practice.

John graduated in 2017 from Durham University with a Bachelor of Laws and was admitted to the Singapore Bar as an Advocate & Solicitor in August 2020.

John’s area of practice covers mainly commercial litigation, insolvency law, international arbitration and general corporate matters.

Experience

Dispute Resolution

  • Judah Value Activist Fund v Open Faith Investment Limited [2021] SGHC(I) 7: Represented in a Singapore International Commercial Court suit in relation to a S$5 million claim against the Defendant for breach of share subscription agreement. Involved legal issues of principles under contract law (causation, mitigation and remoteness of loss). 
  • Wong Shu Kiat and anor v Chen Jinping Michelle (personal representative of the estate of Tin Koon Ming, deceased) and another [2023] SGHC 105: Represented in an High Court suit against the estate of an individual for a claim for the repayment of capital injection under a joint venture. Successfully obtained a judgment against the Defendant for repayment of the capital injection.
  • One of the top Chinese banks: Represented in insolvency proceedings against a Singapore Company for a debt of S$107 million owed to the Chinese bank client. Involved legal issues of duress, multiplicity of proceedings, and Chinese law.
  • Public Prosecutor v Ngiam Zee Moey and others [2022] SGDC 115: Acting for the former independent director in an appeal by the prosecution against an order for acquittal in respect of an offence under Section 331(1) of the Securities and Futures Act 2001.
  • Former Catalist-listed Company Directors: Represented 4 non-executive directors in High Court against a Catalist-listed company’s claim of S$24 million arising from breach of directors’ duties under Singapore law. Involved legal issues in respect of non-executive directors’ duties under Singapore law. The matter was successfully settled for inter alia a sum of approximately S$350,000.
  • SGX Listing Disciplinary Committee proceedings: Represented various former directors of SGX listed companies in Listing Disciplinary Committee proceedings.
  • Confidential High Net Worth Individual: Representing client in a High Court suit to defend against a claim by an Argentinian beverage manufacturing company. Concerned a claim in excess of US$1.4 million for alleged stolen funds. Involved legal issues of tracing, constructive trust, multiplicity of proceedings and certain aspects of Chinese law. 
  • Confidential High Net Worth Individual: Represented in a High Court suit for client’s claim against two directors and shareholders of a Singapore company. Concerned a claim of S$500,000 being repayment of commercial loans and default under personal guarantees. Involved legal issues of moneylender’s act and a counterclaim for return of monies paid to the client. Successfully obtained an injunction and summary judgment against the Defendants.
  • A listed education services provider: Acting in an ongoing SIAC arbitration against a vendor with claims and counterclaims amounting to S$15 million.
  • Capital World Limited: Successfully obtained approval on a “pre-packaged” scheme of arrangement for restructuring of the company’s debts.
  • Re X Diamond Capital Pte Ltd (Metech International Ltd, non-party) [2023] SGHC 253: Successfully represented the applicant in an application for a judicial management order.

General Corporate

  • Various clients: Advised various companies on general corporate matters, employment matters, transaction documents and various corporate actions. 
  • Various clients: Assisted in multiple due diligence exercises.
  • Start-up companies: Assisted in fundraising for various Singapore and Indonesian start-ups, assisting various funds in their investments into start-ups.
  • Singapore Catalist-listed company: Advised an identity management and biometrics company on its joint venture with a middle eastern company in the field of artificial intelligence and big data technologies.
  • SGM Co-operative Ltd: Assisted in preparing the Islamic financing documentation. 
  • Singapore Mainboard-listed company: Advised an energy and logistics company in its proposed acquisition of a motor vehicle works company.
