John Dick is a Consultant in Dentons Rodyk’s Finance practice group. He is also the Singapore-Australasia relationship consultant. He also plays a leadership role on Dentons' Energy, Transportation and Infrastructure and Natural Resources sector groups.

John has practiced as an international lawyer in South East Asia for over 30 years. His legal practice has been focused on foreign investment into ASEAN countries, especially Indonesia and Vietnam with emphasis on Energy, Resources and Infrastructure.

John has been involved in development of infrastructure projects throughout Asia, including Government/Private project development (including PPP, PFI, BOT and BOOT); waste projects including incineration concession agreements and waste to energy projects; water projects including desalination, water purification NEWater and sewerage projects; road and rail projects; port development and telecom projects.

In the Energy area, John has advised on upstream oil and gas projects from grant of production sharing contracts through to gas offtake. He has also been involved in the development of captive, IPP and merchant power projects, mine mouth coal fired power plants, acquisition and sale of interests in power projects and joint venture agreements, power sales and purchase agreements, construction and procurement contracts.

John has a strong reputation in the resources area where he has been involved in some of the largest mining transactions in Indonesia. He has advised on mining rights in various countries in South East Asia, structuring of investments in the resources sector (including joint ventures), licensing and approvals, public listed and private acquisitions and sales, financing of mining projects, commodity offtake agreements, contract mining agreements and mine development including construction and equipment procurement.

As South East Asia Region practice leader, John is responsible for the co-ordination and development of Dentons Rodyk's offices and relationships across South East Asia and oversees the development of the firm's regional practice, emphasizing Singapore's role as a regional hub for legal services.

John was the first Chairman of Australian Business Asia and a past president and life member of both AustCham Singapore and AusCham Vietnam. He is currently the Honorary Treasurer of AustCham ASEAN.

John is listed on the International Who's Who of Mining Lawyers, as well as the Energy and Project Finance & Infrastructure Sections of Best Lawyers.

Energy, Oil, and Gas

  • Liquids extraction plant project: Advising on a liquids extraction plant project in Vietnam, including advising on construction contracts, gas and fuel supply and offtake agreements, joint venture arrangements, government approvals and debt/equity structuring.
  • BOT power plant: Advising on the development of US$350 million BOT power plant including drafting, review and negotiation of fuel supply and power purchase arrangements, government regulatory approval, government guarantee arrangements and debt/equity structuring.
  • Power, Vietnam: Acting for a Singapore company on its acquisition of an interest in an operating power project in Vietnam.
  • Power, India: Acting for a Malaysian company’s acquisition of an interest in an operating power project in India.
  • Mine mouth power project, Sumatra, Indonesia: Acting for a Malaysian company on its bid for a proposed mine mouth power project in Sumatra, Indonesia.
  • Global Energy Company: Advising on an Indonesia to Malaysia gas pipeline project, including drafting and negotiation of the gas sales agreement.
  • Oilfield: Advising a consortium on the development of an oilfield offshore Vietnam.
  • Australian listed energy company: Advising on its Vietnam Block participation, stabilisation issues, gas offtake and FPSO chartering.
  • Greenfield bio-diesel plant: Advising an Australian listed energy company on the development and operations of a greenfield bio-diesel plant in South East Asia.

Infrastructure

  • Australian telecommunications company: Acting for an Australian telecommunications company on its business co-operation contract with VNPT in Vietnam, including US$50 million expansion of that project and the structuring of its proposed US$200 million telecommunications project in Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Public Utilities Board: Acting as international legal advisor to the Public Utilities Board on the PPP project documentation, tender and evaluation for these 3 projects – Tuas Desalination plant, Ulu Pandan NEWater Plant and Changi NEWater Plant.
  • National Environment Authority: Acting as its international legal advisor in relation to the concession agreement entered into as part of its divestment of the Senoko Incinerator Plant.
  • SportsHub, Singapore: Acting as international legal advisor to one of the final 3 consortium bidders.
  • Central Mekong Delta Region Connectivity Project: Advising on the ADB project for a study on mobilizing private international financing for toll road projects in Vietnam.

  • Various companies in Indonesia: Advising various companies on IUP and Contract of Work issues in Indonesia, including joint venturing, licensing and approvals.
  • Gold mining project: Advising on the sale of a gold mining project in the Philippines.
  • Indian infrastructure conglomerate: Advising on a US$500m equity investment into a listed Indonesian company, including coal offtake.
  • UK listed company: Advising on its US$4 billion acquisition of 2 significant coal companies in Indonesia.
  • Indian conglomerate: Advising on a US$1.1 billion acquisition of a 30% stake in 2 major Indonesian coal projects.
  • Indian conglomerate: Advising on a convertible loan and a coal offtake arrangement associated with a US$150m investment in the listing of a company in Indonesia.
  • Thai energy company: Advising on its US$1.2 billion bid for an Indonesia coal mine.
  • Global mining company: Advising on aspects of its global coal marketing arrangements.
  • Global commodities company: Advising on several Indonesian pre-operational mine financings with coal offtake arrangements.
  • Australian mining services company: Advising on its contract mining arrangements with significant coal companies in Indonesia.
