A long-term view to opportunities

Known as one of the last frontier markets in South East Asia, Myanmar’s ongoing transition to a market-oriented economy and electoral democracy has caught the attention of investors worldwide. 

The country continues to undergo rapid change as it aims to integrate itself into the regional and global economy in the coming years, and has been focused on shaping itself to attract and facilitate foreign investment to spur its economy. What does this liberalisation mean for Myanmar?

The 3rd Myanmar Business Leaders' Summit organised by Dentons Rodyk was successfully conducted on Wednesday, 23 May 2018, and gathered local business leaders and policy makers to discuss the country’s development opportunities. Held at the Sule Shangri-La Hotel in Yangon, this year's theme was: A long-term view to opportunities.

The event was graced by Singapore Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Ms. Vanessa Chan and Director General, Directorate of Investment and Company Administration U Aung Naing Oo, alongside other notable figures from the public and private sectors. H.E. Ms. Vanessa Chan gave the opening remarks, and U Aung Naing Oo delivered a keynote address, speaking on the upcoming Company Act and its impact on businesses.

Main discussion points: 

• Myanmar’s business attraction over 2017 and the country’s outlook for 2018 and beyond 
• Digitisation in Myanmar will bring millions of people into the financial system formally – providing them access to secure, regulated, reliable services
• The key to development in Myanmar is the improvement of infrastructure. With multi-lateral agencies pushing the PPP model as a means of creating certainty around the framework for infrastructure investment, Myanmar needs to accelerate its infrastructure program
• Property development projects, including city developments and industrial estates are creating more opportunities for investors
• China’s BRI Initiative offers significant opportunities for infrastructure investment in Myanmar – and will also pave the way for significant industrial investment

The summit was attended by an estimated 180 guests, including representatives from Dentons Rodyk and Dentons Myanmar Limited.
