Myanmar is on track again to post high economic growth – at over 7%, it is the highest among the Southeast Asian countries and it continues to hold tremendous opportunities for development. With the aim of attracting much-needed foreign investment and growing its economy, Myanmar has been focused on developing the country’s business environment, particularly in the following areas:

Power: To meet increasing demand, Myanmar plans to double electricity capacity by 2021 through public-private partnerships. Recently, the Government has given the green light for the development of multiple LNG to Power projects.

Transport: Myanmar’s favourable geographic location has the potential to develop into a key transport and logistics hub between South Asia, Southeast Asia and China – a critical driver for economic growth.

Finance: Digitization in Myanmar will bring millions of people into the financial system formally, providing them access to secure, regulated, reliable services. The role of fintech (financial technology) will be critical in this development.

Urban Infrastructure: Major cities in Myanmar like Yangon, Mandalay and Mawlamyine are expected to see their populations increase. Major development plans need to be implemented in order to meet the needs of growing urban populations. Projects like the Yangon ring road are essential for traffic alleviation in the inner city.

Telecommunications: Mobile penetration has grown tremendously from 7% at the beginning of 2012 to 90% in mid-2016. The increased coverage and broader access to mobile and Internet services will help fuel economic growth and increase inbound investments to the sector. While the mobile services sector has seen explosive growth, the fixed broadband service remains underdeveloped.

On the legislative front, the new Companies Law will come into operation in August. Not only will it streamline the company registration process, it opens up significant opportunities, particularly with respect to capital markets, where Myanmar companies will be able to have up to 35% foreign shareholding whilst retaining their domestic company status.

In addition to discussing development opportunities across sectors, the Summit will also provide an in-depth discussion on the opportunities for Myanmar in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Hear from our moderators and panellists in discussing the opportunities and how to navigate the still developing and evolving Myanmar environment.
